William Jones started the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784. The Asiatic Society was founded by civil servant Sir William Jones on 15 January 1784 in a meeting presided over by Sir William Jones, Justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William at the Fort William in Calcutta, then capital of the British Raj, to enhance and Further the cause of Oriental research.
The society owns an art collection that include paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and Joshua Reynolds. The society.s library contains some 100,000 general volumes, and its Sanskrit section has more than 27,000 books, manuscripts, prints, coins, and engravings. The Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal is published regularly.
