Lactic acid is formed by the fragmentation of glucose in the absence of oxygen. Lactic acid is produced in muscle cells when NADH `+ H^(+)` formed in glycolysis is oxidized to `NAD^(+)` by a transfer of the hydrogen ions to pyruvic acid `(C_(3)H_(4)O_(3))` , which, in turn, is reduced to lactic acid `(C_(3)H_(6)O_(3))`.
