The important rules for binomial nomenclature are as follows :
i) Every organism has unique scientific name liaving two words, generic and specific.
ii) The generic name is written first. Its first letter is always capital.
iii) Generic names should not be repeated in the same kingdom. The same specific word can be used several times but with different genera. Examples : Mangifera indica, Spirogyra indica.
iv) The specific word is written after the generic name. It should be short and simple but can be compound. Example : Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.
v) The specific word starts with small letter.
vi) The names are derived from Latin or Greek language.
vii) Very rarely the generic and common names are the same. Examples : Gorilla, Eucalyptus, Cosmos etc.
viii) The name of the discoverer is written after the species name in abbreviated or full form. Example: Mangifera indica L. (L stands for Linnaeus).
ix) Scientific name is printed in italics. Hand written name is underlined.
x) When an organism is provided with different scientific names, the earliest one is given preference.
