Meristematic tussue includes the group. or cluster of cells which remain in continuous state of division for retain their power of division. The meristematic tissues divide to form new cells which differentiate to give rise to permanent tissues. Meristems are classified variously on the basis of position in the plant body, origin and their function. Depending upon position in the plant body meristems are of the following three types:
(i) Apical meristem : It is located at the growing apices, of main, lateral shoots and roots. Their function is to enhance linear, axilary or primary growth. ii) Intercalary meristem : It is located in between the regions of permanent tissues. It is beleived that some postions of apical meristems are left behined due to tissue differentiation of an organ. Function of this meristem is to causes linear growth. For example, Mentha viridis (mint), wheat, grasses and Pinus.
(iii) Lateral meristem : This meristem consists of initials which divide mainly in one plane and result is increase in the diameter of an orgen. For example, cambium, cork cambium and marginal meristem of some leaves.
