A graph between extent of adsorption (x/m) and the pressure (p) of a gas at constant temperature is called adsorption isotherm.
Freundlich.s adsorption isotherm Freundlich gave a relationship between the amount of the gas adsorbed (x) per unit mass of the adsorbent(m) and the pressure (p)at constant temperature. This is known as Freundlich.s adsorption isotherm.
(i) At low pressure, the graph is almost straight. This means that x/m is directly proportional to the pressure. `x/m prop p. Or x/m = kp......(i)` , where k is a constant .
ii) At high pressure, the value of x/m becomes almost constant, i.e., it does not change with change of pressure . `x/m` = constant Or `x/m prop p^@ (because p^@ = 1) x/m = k p^@`
iii) At intermediate range of pressure, will depend upon the power of pressure which lies between 0 to 1. `x/m prop p^(1//n) Or x/m = k p^(1//n)`

Where, n is a constant which depends upon the nature of adsorbate and adsorbent. Taking logarithm on both sides of equation (iii),
`log x/m = log k + 1/n log p`
If we plot a graph between log (x/m) and log p, a straight line will be obtained. The slope of the line is equal to 1/n and the intercept on log (x/m) axis will correspond to log k.
