Cyclotron is not suitable for accelerating electrons.' Explain why.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A moving electron possesses K.E. which is given by `K.E. = (1)/(2) m_(e) v ^(2),` where `m_(e)` is the mass of electron. Since mass of electron is very small, therefore even small energy can increase the speed of electron tremendously. As a result of this increased speed, electron gets out of step with the oscillating field. Due to this reason electron cannot be accelerated by cyclotron.
