Electromagnetic waves consist of time varying electric and magnetic fields, which are mutually perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the direction of propagation of wave. Properties of electromagnetic waves are as follows.

(i) Electromagnetic waves do not require any material medium for their propagation
(ii) Electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature.
(iii) Electromagnetic waves travel in free space with a velocity of light i.e., `3 xx 10^(8)m//s`.
(iv) Electromagnetic waves obey principle of superposition.
