What is superposition principle ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It states that when two or more wave motions travellling through a medium superimpose one another, a new wave is formed in which resultant displacement `(vecy)` at any instant is equal to the vector sum of displacements due to individual waves `(vecy_(1),vecy_(2),...)` at that instant.
i.e., For example, `vecy=vecy_(1)+vecy_(2)+vecy_(3)+...` when crest of one wave falls on the crest of the other, amplitude of the resultant wave is sum of the amplitudes of two waves:
When crest of one wave falls on the through of the other, the amplitude of the resultant wave is the difference of the amplitudes of two waves.
