Describe mode of reproduction in animals.

The asexual reproduction (by frangmentation, budding etc.) is limited to the lower phyla only.
All animals are capable of sexual reproduction. The male and female sex orans are called testes and ovaries respectively. When testes and ovaries are present in the same individual, the animal is called bisexual or monoecious, or hermaphrodite eg earthworms, sycon, leeches, tapeworms etc.. However, in animals the male and female sex organs are present in different individuals. Such animals are called unisexual or dioecious eg birds, snakes, butterflies snails, fishes and mammals. The egg laying animals are called oviparous. The term viviparous is applied to those animals which give birth to young ones. Fertilization may be external or internal. Development may occur outside or within the body of the mother. The young one may resemble the adult when the development is said to be direct eg human beings and birds, or development is indirect in which larva is formed. Finally, the larva undergoes metamorphosis to form adult eg house fly, frog, tapeworm, liver fluke etc.
