Why do we often regard the potential of ...

Why do we often regard the potential of the earth to be zero?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

To measure potential or potential difference we need reference whose potential is a constant. The earth is the best choice because it is a good conductor of very large size. Addition of some small charge to earth does not change its potential like pouring some water in sea does not change its water level. For this reason, the electric potential of the earth is taken to be zero.
