Explain the effect of temperature on the resistivity of pure semiconductors.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Resistivity of a semi-conductor decreases with the rise in temperature. The temperature variation of resistivity in case of semi-conductors is given by
`E_(g)//kT`
`rho = rho_(0)e^(E_(g)//kT)`
where `k = 1.381 xx 10^(-23)"J mol"^(-1) K^(-1)` = Boltzmann.s constant
`E_g` = Energy gap between valence band and conduction band
`rho_0` = Resistivity of the substance at `0^@C`
`rho` = Resistivity of the substance at temperature `T^@C`
