A piece of copper and another of germanium are cooled from room temperature to 100 K. What will happen to their conductivities? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Conductivity of a metal increases when it is cooled due to decrease in its resistance. Conductivity of semi conductors decreases on its cooling because energy gap between conduction band and valence band increases on cooling (with decrease in temperature).

In an intrinsic semiconductor the energy gap E_g is 1.2eV . Its hole mobility is much smaller than electron mobility and independent of temperature. What is the ratio between conductivity at 600K and that at 300K? Assume that the temperature dependence of intrinsic carrier concentration ni is given by n_i= n_0 exp((E_g)/(2k_BT)) where n_0 is constant.
