Derive an expression for the magnetic dipole moment of an atom.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atom as a magnetic dipole: In each and every atom, electrons revolve around the nucleus. So an atom behaves as a current loop. We know that face of loop behaves as a north able through which current appears to be flowing in anticlockwise direction. The face of the loop through which current appears to be flowing in clockwise direction behaves as a south pole. So can say that each atom is actually a tiny magnetic dipole.
