1. Paramagnetic Materials :
Those substances which are weakly magnetised in the direction of magnetic field are known as paramagnetic substances.
For example Aluminium, Chromium, Manganese etc.
2. Ferromagnetic Materials :
Those substances which are strongly magnetised in the direction of field are known as ferromagnetic substances.
For example : Iron, Steel, Nickel.
3. Diamagnetic Materials :
3. Diamagnetic Materials :
Those substances which are weakly magnetised in a direction opposite to that of the applied magnetic field are known as diamagnetic substances.
For example : Glass, Quartz, Bismuth etc.
Properties of Paramagnetic substances :
1. These are weakly attracted by a magnet.
2. In non-uniform magnetic field, these move from weaker to stronger field.
3. On placing inside a magnetic field, these get weakly magnetised in the direction of magnetic field.
4. Magnetic susceptability for a paramangetic substance has small positive value.
5. Due to rise in temperature, these substance lose their magnetism.
6. Paramagnetic substances obey Curie.s law.
Properties of Ferromagnetic substances :
1. These are strongly attracted by a magnet.
2.In non-uniform magnetic field, these move from weaker to stronger field.
3. On placing inside a magnetic field, they get strongly magnetised in the direction of magnetic field.
4. Magnetic susceptability for ferromagnetic substances has large positive value.
5. Due to rise in temperature, these substances lose their magnetism and behave as paramagnetic substances.
6. Ferromagnetic substances obey Curie.s law.
Properties of Diamagnetic substances :
1. These are weakly repelled by a magnet.
2 . In a non-uniform magnetic field, these substances move from stronger to weaker field.
3. On placing inside a magnetic field, these substances feebly magnetised in a direction opposite to that of applied field.
4. Magnetic suscpetability for diamagnetic substances has small negative value.
5. These remain uneffected with the change in temperature.
6. These do not obey Curie.s law.
