The work function for a certain metal is 4.2 eV. Will this metal give photoelectric emission for incident radiation of wavelenght 330 nm?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Work function = `phi_0 = 4.2 eV`,
`lamda= 330nm`
`lamda=330xx10^(-9)m`
Energy of incident radiation = `E=hv=(hc)/(lamda)`
`(6.62xx10^(-34)xx3x10^8)/(330xx10^(-9))`
`E=(19.86)/330xx10^(-34+8+9)`
`=0.060xx10^(-17)`
`E=0.60xx10^(-18)J`
`E(0.6xx10^(-18))/(1.6xx10^(-19))eV`
`=3.76xx10^1eV`
`E=0.376 eV` As `Eltphi_0`, so a radiation of wavelengti 330 m can not emit photoelectrons.
