The work function for a certain metal is 4.2 eV. Will this metal give photoelectric emission for incident radiation of wavelenght 330 nm?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Work function = `phi_0 = 2 eV`
`lamda= 400nm`
`lamda=400xx10^(-9)m`
`lamda=4xx10^(-7)m`
Energy of incident radiation = `E=(hc)/(lamda)`
`(6.62xx10^(-34)xx3xx10^8)/(4xx10^(-7))`
`=(19.86)/(4.5)xx10^(-34+8+7)`
`E=4.965xx10^(-9)`
`E=(4.965xx10^(-19))/(1.6xx10^(-19))eV`
`E=3.1eV`
As `Eltphi_0=`, so radiation of wavelength 400 nm can eject a photoelectron from the metal surface.
