Natural radioactive nuclei are nuclei of...

Natural radioactive nuclei are nuclei of high mass number. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For the nuclei of high mass number
(i) B.E./nucleon is small as compared to stable nuclei.
(ii) Neutron to proton ratio is different from that of stable nuclei.
That is why nuclei having high mass number undergo radioactive decay so as to attain large value of binding energy per nucleon and can become stable.
