What is the role of a moderator in a nuclear reactor?

In a nuclear reactor, the fast neutrons may escape without  causing fission. So for the sustained nuclear chain reaction, neutrons are slowed down by using graphite rods or heavy water. Such materials used to slow down the neutrons are called moderator.
