Why is heavy water used as moderator?...

Why is heavy water used as moderator?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Heavy water is used to slow down the neutrons produced during the nuclear fission of uranium `(""_(92)U^(235))` nucleus. Fast moving neutrons cannot cause fission. When heavy water is used as a moderator, then fast moving neutrons lose energy on collision with the water molecular and get slowed down and become suitable for carrying nuclear fission. That is why heavy water is used as a moderator in a nuclear reactor.
