What is the difference between glass and quartz. While both are made up of `SiO_(4)` tetrahedra.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Glass is an amorphous solid in which the constituent particles `(SiO_(4)^(4-)` tetrahedra) have only a shoet range order and there is no long order. In quartz, the constituent particles `(SiO_(4)^(4-)` tetrahedra) have short range as well as long order. On melting quartz and hten cooling it rapidly, it is converted into glass.
