What is the effect of temperature on electrical conductivity of a semiconductor?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In case of a semiconductor the gap between valence band the conduction band is small and therefore some of the electrons may jump from valence band to conduction band and some conductivity is observed. Electrical conductivity of semiconductors increases with increasing temperature. This is due to the fatc that with increase in temperature, large number of electrons from the valence band can jump to the condcution band. Pure substances that exhibits conducting behaviour like that of silicon and germanium are called intrinsic semiconductors.
