Analysis shows that nickel oxide has the formula `Ni_(0.98)O`. What fractions of the nickel exist as `Ni^(2+)andNi^(3+)` ions ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the given nickel oxide 98 Ni ion are associated with 100 O-ions. Out of 98 Ni ion, suppose Ni present as `Ni^(2+)=x`.
Then Ni present as `Ni^(3+)=98-x`
Total charge on `xNi^(2+)and(98-x)Ni^(3+)100I^(2-)` ions.
Hence,
`x xx2+(98-x)xx3=100xx2or2x+294`
`-3x=200orx=94`
`Ni^(2+)=94/(98)xx100=96%`
Fraction of Ni present as `Ni^(3+)`
`=4/(98)xx100=4%`
