A compound is formed by two elements in ...

A compound is formed by two elements in M and N. The element N forms ccp and atoms of M occupy 1/3rd of tetrahedral voids. What is the formula of the compound ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Suppose atoms of element N present in ccp = n
Then, no. of tetrahedral void = 2n
As 1/3rd of the tetrahedral voids are occupted by atoms of element M therefore no. of atoms M present
`=1/(3)xx2n=(2n)/(3)`
`therefore` Ratio of `N:M=n:(2n)/(3)=3n:2n=3:2`
`therefore` Formula of the compound `:N_(3)M_(2)orM_(2)N_(3)`.
