State and explain Kohlrausch's law. How would you determine the molar conductance of a weak electrolyte at infinite dilution?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This law states that "at infinite dilution when the dissociation is complete, each ion makes a definite contribution towards molar conductance of the electrolyte irrespective of the nature of the other ion with which it is associated." This means that the molar conductance at infinite dilution can be expressed as the sum of the contributions from the ions of the electrolyte. if molar conductivity at infinite dilution of cation is denoted by `lamda_(+)^(0)` and that of anion by `lamda_(-)^(0)`, then according to Kahlrauch.s law
`lamda_(m)^(0)=xlamda_(+)^(0)+ylamda_(-)^(0)`
where x and y are the number of cations and anions per formula unit of electrolyte. for example for `MgCl_(2)`,
`lamda_(m)^(0)(MgCl_(2))=lamda_(m)^(0)(Mg^(2+))+2lamda^(@)(Cl^(-))`
