Why do alcohols have higher boiling points than haloalkanes ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The inter -molecular forces of attraction between molecular of alcohol are strong H- bonding .On the other hand , the intermolecular forces of attraction between molecules of haloalkanes are comparatively weaker dipole -dipole interactions Due to stronger intermolecular forces of attraction in alcohols, alcohols have higher boiling points than haloalkanes of comparable molecular mass .
