Why are alcohols comparatively more soluble in water than the corresponding hydrocarbons ?

Alcohols can form H- bonds with water and break the H- Bonds already between water molecules .therefore , they are in general ,soluble in water .

On the other hand , hydrogcarbons cannot form H- bonds with water and hence are insoluble in water .
