Why are alcohols soluble in water ?...

Why are alcohols soluble in water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Solubilities of alcohols and phenols in water is due to H - bonding .The magnitude of H- bonding decreases with increase in the size of the hydrophilic alkyl or aryl group .Small size of hydrophilic R- group in lower alcohols make them freely soluble in water . In phenol the size of the phenol group `(C_(6)H_(5))` is quite large , as such phenol is not much soluble in water .
