Why alcohols are weaker acids than water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alcohols are weaker acids than water .

Acidic character of alcohols is due to the polarity of O- H bond An electron releasing group , R in alcohol increases the electron density on oxygen tending to decrease in polarity of O-H bond This decreases the acid strength .Further presence of electron releasing R- group in alkoxide ion destabilizes it , thus decreasing the acid strength of alcohol .On the other hand , sthere is no such electron releasing group in water . As such water is a stronger acid than alcohols Further , more the number of electron releasing groups (R ) weaker acid is the alcohol Thus , acidic strength of `1^(@),2^(@),3^(@)` alcohold dcreases in the order .
