The distinction between `1^(@),2^(@)and3^(@)` alcohols can be made with the help of Lucas reagent which is an equimolar mixture of cone . HCl and anhydrous `ZnCl_(2)` Alcohols will react with this reagent to form chlorolkanes .
`-underset(|)overset(|)(C)-OH+HCl(aq)overset("Anhydrous"ZnCl_(2))tounderset("Chloroalkane (clondiness")(-underset(|)overset(|)(C)-Cl)+H_(2)O`
As chloroalnes are insoluble in water a cloudiness appears . The order of reactivity w.r.t . alcohol in this reaction is `3^(@)gt2^(@)gt1^(@)` .
Therefore a cloudines appear immediately in case of a `3^(@)` alcohol . within 5 minutes in case of a `2^(@)` alcohol and in case of a `1^(@)` alcohol cloudoness appear only on heating .
