Enumerate the reactions of D-glucose which cannot be explained by its open chain structure.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The open chain structure of D-glucose can explain most of its properties but the following reactions could not be explained by this structure.

(i) Despite having the aldehyde group, glucose does not give 2,4-DNP test, Shiff.s reagent test, and it does not form the hydrogen sulphite addition product with `NaHSO_3`.
(ii) Acetylation of glucose with acetic anhydride gives glucose pentaacetate in which the five-OH groups present in glucose are acetylated.
