According to modern definition, an antibiotic is a substance produced wholly or partly by chemical synthesis, which in low concentrations inhibits the growth or destroy microorganisms by intervening in their metabolic processes. For example, chloramphrenicol, tetracycline etc. First antibiotic discovered was penicillin.
