Which one of the soap and synthetic detergent can be used to check the hardness of water ?

Synthetic detergents cannot be used to check the hardness of water. However, soaps can be used to check the hardness of water, To test the hardness of water, take equal volume (say 10 mL) or hard and soft water in two different similar test tubes. Now add equal amount of soap (say 0.5 g) to these test tubes and shake well. Then test tube in which more foam is produced contains soft water while the other sample of water is hard water.
