Explain what is meant by 'Biofortification?

Biofortification involves breeding crops with higher levels of vitamins and minerals or higher protein and healthier fats. It is the most practical method to improve public health.
The foods is do not contains essential micronutrients like Iron, Iodine, Zn, Vitamin A, which increases the risk of diseases.
Breeding for improved nutritional quality is done with the objective of improving :
(i) protein contents and quality
(ii) oil contents and quality
(iii) vitamin contents
(iv) micronutrients and mineral contents.
Examples of crop plants with increased nutritional qualities that have been developed and released by IARI, New Delhi-
(i) Maize hybrid varieties rich in lysine and tryptophan-Golden maize.
(ii) Wheat variety Atlas-60 having high protein contents, used as donor for improving cultivated wheat.
(iii) Iron fortified rice variety-Golden rice.
(iv) Vitamin-A enriched variety of carrot, spinach, pumpkin, maize, golden sweet potato.
(v) Vitamin-C enriched bittergourd, Bathua, mustard, tomato.
(vi) Iron and calcium enriched spinach and Bathua.
(vii) Protein enriched-Bean-broad, lablab, French and garden peas.
