Golden rise is the variety of rice (Oryza sativa) produced through genetic engineering to biosynthesise `beta`-carotene a precursor of vitamin A, in the edible part of rice. It will eleminate shortage ​of dietary vitamin A, a deficiency which is estimated to kill 6,70,000 children under the age of 5 each year. It is biofortified rice, rich in Vitamin A. The research that led to golden rice was conducted with the goal of helping children who suffer from vitamin A deficiency. Many children in vitamin A deficiency affected countries rely on golden rice as a staple food and overcoming child blindness.
