How are restriction endonuclease enzymers are named? Write Example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nomenclature of Restriction Enzymes. The restriction enzymes are named for the bacterium from which they have been isolated. The first letter used for the enzyme is the first letter of the genus name of the bacterium, second and third letters are the first two letters of its species, fourth one refers to the first letter of the strain. In the last roman numbers are present which tell about the order in which enzymes were isolated from that strain of the bacterium. For example, the enzyme EcoRI was isolated from Escherichia (E) coli (co) strain RY13 and it was first endonuclease (I) from this bacterium.
