Explain the concept of pyramid of energy.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is a graphic representation of amoung of energy trapped per unit time and area in different trophic levels of food chain with producers forming the base and top carnivores at the tip

The energy content is expressed as `K Cal//m^2//yr` or `KJ//m^2//yr`. Maximum energy content is found in producers as they trap solar energy . it is converted into chemical energy and stored in the organic matter produced by producers. As energy passes into higher trophic levels is passed to next trophic level. SO energy goes on decreasing . SO pyramid of energy is always upright or erect in nature.
