Explain the meaning of 10% law....

Explain the meaning of 10% law.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It was given by Lindeman in 1942. It states that only 10% energy available at a trophic level is passed on the next trophic level in a food chain. So energy at the successive trophics level goes on decreasing. Some energy is lost as heat to the environment during transfer and a part is utilised or stored by trophic level for its own metabolic needs. That is why in a food chain there are limited number of trophic levels.
