2-Hydroxypropane `(CH_(3)CHOHCH_(3))` contains the grouping `CH_(3)CHOH` - and acetophenone `(C_(6)H_(5)COCH_(3))` contains the grouping `CH_(3)CO` - linked to carbon and hence give yellow ppt. with `l_(2)` and alkali-iodoform test.
In methyl acetate `(CH_(3)CO-OC_(2)H_(5))` and acetamide `(CH_(3)CO-NH_(2)),CH_(3)CO` is attached to a hetero atom but not to carbon atom and hence both these compounds do not give iodoform test.
