In the circuit shown in figure

`E_1=10 V, E_2=4V, r_1=r_2=1Omega` and `R=2Omega`.
Find the potential difference across battery 1 and battery 2.

A

5.5 V each

B

8.5 V each

C

5.5 V, 8.5 V

D

8.5 V, 5.5 V

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Net emf of the circuit `=E_(1)-E_(2)=6V`
Total resistance of the circuit `=R+r_(1)+r_(2)=4Omega`
`:.` Current in the circuit, `i=("net emf")/("total resistance")=(6)/(4)=1.5A`
Now, `V_(1)=E_(1)-ir_(1)=10-(1.5)(1)=8.5V`
and `V_(2)=E_(2)+ir_(2)=4+(1.5)=5.5V`
