In our universe, various kinds of living organisms are present. Approximately 1.7 to 1.8 million species have been described so for but still others remain unidentified. About 1.2 million type of animals and about 0.5 million types of plants have already been described and named. The animals and plants vary greatly in their form, structure and mode of life. They are divided into groups and sub-groups on the basis of similarities and dissimilarities among them. The grouping of organism is very useful because :
i) It makes their study convenient
ii) It shows the relationship among the various groups of organism.
iii) It facilitates identification of organism.
iv) It provides information about the plants and animals which do not occur in one.s own locality.
