A system based on the all natural available characters of organisms is called natural system of classification. A natural system of classification for higher plants was worked out by Bentham and Hooker in their book Genera Plantarum. The characters employed in natural system are morphological , anatomical, developmental ( embryological ) reproductive, cytological, physiological, behavioural and biochemical. For example, pisces have two chambered heart, gills, scales , fins and inability to regulate their body temperature. SUch organisms are placed in one group. Mammals have four chambered heart, ears, hair, mammary glands, vivipary and able to maintain their body temperature. Such organisms are placed in another group.
Advantages
Natural system of classification is better than artificial system of classification due to the following reasons `:`
(i) Only related organisms occur in a group.
(ii) The system establishes natural relationship among organisms.
(iii) It is not rigid and is able to absorb any new information to make it more natural.
(iv) It brings out phylogenetic relationship.
