What makes a glass different from a solid such as quartz ? Under what conditions could quartz be converted into glass ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Solids such as quartz and glass differ from one another by the arrangement of their constituent particles. In quartz `(SiO_2),SiO_4` units are joined to one another in an ordered manner. But in amorphous solids such as glass, `SiO_4` units are arranged in random or in an irregular manner. silica (quartz) is melted and its melt is cooled, quartz (crystalline) changes into glass (amorphous).
