A compound is formed by two elements in M and N. The element N forms ccp and atoms of M occupy 1/3rd of tetrahedral voids. What is the formula of the compound ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The ccp lattice is formed by the element N. The number of tetrahedral voids formed is twice the number of atoms of element N and only `1/3`rd of these are occupied by atoms of element M. Hence the ratio of the number of atoms ofM and N is `2xx1/3` or 2:3 and the formula of the compound is `M_2N_3`
