What are Frenkel defects ? Discuss

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Frenkel defects were discovered by Russian scientist Frenkel. These defects arise when certain

ions leave their nonnal positions and occupy interstitial sites. Holes are created at the leaving position. For example, AgCl, AgI etc.

Why the Schottky defect and Frenkel defects are called as Thermodynamic or intrinsic defects ?

Ionic lattic has two major points defects ,(1) Schottky (2) Frenkel defects . Schottkly defects occurs due to the cations - anion pair's missing from the lattice sites . Frenkel defects occurs when smaller ion leaves from its lattic site and fits into an intersitial space.which defect decrease density of the crystal ?

Ionic lattic has two major points defects ,(1) Schottky (2) Frenkel defects . Schottkly defects occurs due to the cations - anion pair's missing from the lattice sites . Frenkel defects occurs levels its lattic site and fits into an intersitial space. The neturaity of the crystal is benig maintained and we considerd all losses from interstitical positions. Structure shown here represents :
