By adding cation of higher valency in an ionic solid, some of the sites of the original cations are occupied by the cations of higher valency. Each cation of higher valency replaces two or more origional cations and occupies the site of one origional cation and other sites remian vacant. e.g., `SrCl_2` (Strontium chloride) added in ionic solid sodium chloride `(Na^(+)Cl^(-))`.
