Describe the two main types of semiconductors.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Semiconductors are of two types as given below :
i) n-type semiconductors: When group 14 elements are doped with group 15 elements having five valence electrons, formation of semiconductors take place. In this, oneextra electron which is not used in bonding becomes delocalised and conducts electricity
ii) p-type semiconductors : When group 14 elements are doped with group 13 elements having three valence electrons, formation of p-type semiconductors take place. Here, some electron sites remain vacant and give rise to electron deficiencies. This forms a new positive hole on group 14 elements. This vacant hole is responsible for conduction of electricity.
