Explain, why does elevation in boilng point occur on the addition of non-volatile solute into it ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a non-volatile solute is added in the solvent, boiling point gets higher. Because when non-volatile solute is dissolved in solvent, vapour pressure of water decreases. It is due to the fact that some of the solvent molecules on the surface are replaced by solute molecules, which are non-volatile. The solution has to be heated more to make vapour pressure equal to external pressure. Hence, boiling point is increased.
