Give the different applications, of adsorption.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The main applications of adsorption are as follows:
i) Gas masks : The poisonous gases (adsorbate) are adsorbed by gas masks which are made up of activated charcoal. ii) Separation of noble gases : All noble gases have different adsorbing power towards the charcoal. Due to different adsorbing power, noble gases can be separated out from each other. iii) Heterogeneous catalysis : In heterogeneous catalysis, hydrogen gases are adsorbed over the surface of metal. iv) Control of humidity: Water vapours are adsorbed by silica and aluminium gel to control the humidity. v) Removal of colouring matter : Animal charcoal adsorbs coloured particles from solution and makes it colourless.
