This method is employed for purifying crude.titanium metal and zirconium metal. In this process, impure metal is heated with a substance like iodine. It changes to unstable volatile compound. Again when it is heated to very high temperature, unstable compound gets decomposed and gives pure metal. For example, titaniuni is purified as follows :
`Ti(s) + 2I_2(s) underset(("Impure metal")) overset(500K)to TiI_4 (g) , Til_4(g) underset(("Pure metal"))overset(1700K) to Ti(s) + 2I_2(g) `
