What is meant by hydrometallurgy ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrometallurgy is the process of extraction of metals. Ore is mixed in a particular chemical reagent. Then, precipitation of metal occurs with the help of more electropositive metal. For example, for precipitation of silver, concentrated argentite (`Ag_2S`) is treated with the solution of NaCN. It forms sodium dicyanoargentate (I). Then, alkaline solution of it is treated with more electropositive metal like Zn or Al to precipitate silver.
